Why We Keep Choosing the Same Person (Even When the Name Changes)

Hi, it’s Ameenah. I hope you’ve got a quiet minute wherever you’re reading this from. Let’s get into it.

I had a client a while back — I’ll call her R — who sat down across from me and said, half laughing, half exhausted, “I need you to explain why I keep dating the same man with three different faces.”

She wasn’t wrong. Different jobs, different cities, even different heights. But underneath, the same shape. Someone warm at first and then slowly unavailable. Someone she had to work to keep.

She wanted to know what was wrong with her. That’s almost always the first question. I asked her a different one instead. What did unavailable used to mean to you, before you ever dated anyone at all.

The pattern isn’t a coincidence, and it isn’t bad luck

Here’s what I’ve come to understand after 26 years of sitting across from people in exactly R’s seat, and what the research actually backs up: we are not unlucky in love so much as we are loyal to something old.

In 1987, psychologists Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver ran a study that changed how the field understood adult relationships. They found that the same bond system that forms between an infant and a caregiver doesn’t retire once we grow up. It becomes the template we bring into romantic love. In their research, people who remembered their early caregiving as warm and consistent tended to move through adult relationships feeling secure — comfortable with closeness, not too rattled by a partner’s absence. People who remembered it as inconsistent or distant tended to land in one of two other places. Some became anxious, scanning for signs that a partner was pulling away. Others became avoidant, keeping love a little at arm’s length before it could disappoint them the way it once did.

None of that is a character flaw. It’s an internal working model, which is really just a fancy way of saying: a child built a map of how love behaves, using the only two people who were available to teach it. And then, without ever consciously deciding to, that child grew up and kept using the same map.

Your nervous system isn’t looking for happy. It’s looking for familiar.

This is the part that trips people up, so I want to say it plainly. The subconscious mind was never built to find you a good relationship. It was built to find you a recognizable one. Familiar feels safe to the nervous system even when familiar was never actually safe. If chaos was the water you learned to swim in as a child, calm can feel oddly like nothing is happening. Some people mistake peace for boredom because their whole system was trained on a different baseline.

Sigmund Freud noticed this pattern over a century ago and called it repetition compulsion — the unconscious pull to recreate an old wound, again and again, sometimes with the private hope of finally getting a different outcome. Modern psychology has moved past some of Freud’s specific theories about why, but the pattern itself holds up. Children raised around emotional unpredictability often go on to find predictability boring and unpredictability magnetic, because the nervous system has learned to read chaos as the sound of love actually happening.

R didn’t choose unavailable men because she didn’t value herself. She chose them because some part of her, still very young, already knew exactly how to love someone who might leave. That was a skill she’d been practicing since she was small. Stability, by comparison, was a language she’d never been taught to speak.

What happened to you, not what’s wrong with you

I keep coming back to Gabor Maté’s question in almost every session, because I think it’s the only honest door into this work: not what’s wrong with you, but what happened to you. And what did this pattern protect you from.

For R, chasing someone’s affection had once meant something. If she could just be good enough, attentive enough, easy enough, maybe the parent who came and went emotionally would finally stay. That strategy made complete sense at six years old. It kept a small, dependent person hopeful in a situation she had no power to change. The tragedy isn’t that she developed the pattern. The tragedy is that nobody told her, twenty years later, that the pattern had a shelf life, and that it had quietly expired.

I understand where that part of her came from. Truly. It was never trying to sabotage her adult love life. It just never got the memo that she wasn’t six anymore, and that she now had choices a six-year-old never had.

Sometimes the story is older than any parent

I’ll go a little further here, the way I sometimes do, and I say this with wonder, not certainty. In over two decades of past life regression work, I’ve sat with people whose relationship pattern didn’t trace back to any parent or childhood wound at all. No cold mother, no absent father to point to. Just a pull toward a certain kind of person, or a certain kind of pain, that’s been there for as long as they can remember.

In Vedic astrology we look at the seventh house for partnership, and Rahu and Ketu, the karmic nodes, for the unfinished business the soul is still working through. Sometimes what shows up in a relationship isn’t only this childhood repeating. It’s an older loop. A soul that has found the same lesson, or the same person, across more than one lifetime, still circling the same question until it’s finally answered instead of avoided.

I don’t think every relationship pattern needs a past life explanation. Most of what plays out really was built right here, at a real kitchen table, with real parents doing their best with what they had. But some of it is older. And when it is, no amount of dating differently fixes it, because the pattern was never really about this particular person to begin with. It was about a soul still trying to complete something.

We are not victims of our own wiring

Whatever built the pattern — a childhood, or something further back — we are not stuck being run by it. That’s not a hopeful thing I’m saying to soften the truth. It’s the most literal thing I know about the brain. Neurons that fire together wire together, which is Hebbian learning in its plainest form, and it cuts both ways. A pathway built by repetition, reaching for the same kind of unavailable love again and again, can be rebuilt the same way. Through repetition. Through safety. Through finally noticing the pattern while it’s happening, instead of only recognizing it in hindsight, months into another relationship that started to feel familiar in all the wrong ways.

Choice is a superpower, and here it starts small. Not swearing off dating, not overhauling your entire type overnight. Just the choice, the next time someone feels instantly, thrillingly familiar, to pause and ask why. Is this person actually safe, or does this just feel like something I already know how to survive.

R, by the way, is still doing this work. She’ll catch herself now, mid-crush, and ask the question out loud before she lets herself fall any further. That pause is the whole shift. Not that the old pull disappeared. Just that she stopped mistaking it for a sign.

If you want to hear more of a story like this — including one of my own, because I know exactly what it is to confuse familiar with safe — I go into it on this week’s episode of Chai With Ameenah. The blog is the research. The podcast is the part that actually happened.

When I first met Ameenah, we connected energetically. I asked questions about hypnotherapy and her responses led me to feel comfortable that she has both the skills and experience to help me work on my healing. I committed to 6 sessions and felt comfortable from the first. Ameenah listened and asked probative questions that allowed us to target the areas most important to me. The changes I've been able to make as a result of our work have been wonderful. Thank you, Meenu!

I think Ameenah is one of the best counselors out there. She cuts through the bullcrap and gives you real life advice. I miss my sessions with her and am thinking of seeing her again because it was very helpful to get the weight lifted off my chest just by talking to her. She also never looked at the clock during my session which I loved.

I had a very similar experience to many of the clients who have previously made their reviews. I had debilitating anxiety ever since I could remember (3-4 years old) which progressed into to multiple involuntary hospitalizations, money spent on psychotherapy where I felt chronically misunderstood and that I felt was formulaic and an overgeneralizing, "outdated" methodology. Years of this made me feel disempowered, and since my symptoms were not improving, I was eventually diagnosed multiple psychiatric disorders. Ultimately, I was met with an array of subsequent treatment regimes via the health care system that never cared to truly appreciate the underlying reasons of the challenges that were symptomatic of a more intrinsic cause. To stress my case, I was experiencing overwhelming anxiety and quasi-delusions that would disrupt the quality of my day-to-day life for years before I started seeing Ameenah. It has been over a month of treatment, and although these symptoms aren't gone entirely and I don't expect them to, I've seen vast improvements to my mental and emotional health, as well as a newfound faith in myself. I speculate this is b/c she actually carefully caters and curates the treatment program, paying attention to the client's actual temperament(s) and characteristics. That alone is what distinguishes her from more traditional forms of therapies. Not only that, but she is a genuine, loving, resourceful and healing person who always takes as much time as you need to talk to you in a way that is productive and conducive to your healing journey. Moreover, she also takes an integrative, holistic approach which incorporates strategies to handle acute stressors, as well long-term strategies that get to the crux of your situation. I highly recommend Ameenah because she gives you the foundations that further encourage independent growth, and what sets her apart is that she also is able to inspire sincere faith in oneself to live a life without limiting and confining beliefs. Update on January 5, 2024: I saw Ameenah two days ago for spiritual and mindset coaching and updated her on my progress on my healing journey. She always answers my questions with earnest humility and sensibility. While it has been months since I have had a hypnotherapy session, all that I have garnered and absorbed from previous sessions have been gestating within my subconscious mind and I have been latently cultivating and priming the lessons I've learned from her without needing to effortfully foster them. Several months ago, it was debilitating for me to merely step outside my house, let alone talk to people while maintaining eye contact and maintain a self-assured posture (for a particular example), now I feel like although not 100% there, I feel much more grounded in my self-frame and feel so much progress towards healing CPTSD and I can let myself love myself by trusting in myself, hence being able to walk outside, have some conversations. If I hadn't consulted Ameenah last summer, I would have surely tried to find services adjacent to her's but would not know where to go for certain. I highly value the time and efforts and work she' done with me, and will be coming back in the future as I feel necessary. Update: September 23, 2024 I stopped seeing Ameenah for her hypnotherapy and spiritual coaching services a while back and resumed every week since late June of this year and I can say that my mind has sincerely acclimated to a different and more constructive and optimistic attitude overall. Before, I was living in a way that was not honouring my authentic self—obstructed by personal obstacles that were prompted by an unhealthy subconscious mind, but after seeing her and identifying the core issues, I recognized what was impeding my self-developmental progress. Finally, I know that there are a ways to go but I am in the midst of reconstructing certain neuropathways with the help of Ameenah to live a life that privileges who I really am at the core and to liberate myself from the reigns of negative thought distortions. :)

Working with Ameenah over the past three months has been amazing! Her insightful knowledge of the brain combined with a spiritual approach to healing has been so helpful for me, and i felt that she really understood me and was able to help me navigate through my hardships. Over the past few months of sessions with her i have noticed a significant positive shift in myself and my life. She is such an amazing and gifted healer, I would highly recommend her to anyone in search of healing💕

Ameenah’s Transformation 90 program has been a game-changer for me, especially in dealing with my anxiety around relationships and showing up authentically. Ameenah is incredibly compassionate and deeply dedicated to her work, creating a safe and supportive space for healing. Through the program, I learned the importance of loving myself first, and I noticed how this self-love naturally improved my relationships. Ameenah’s guidance gave me the tools I needed to explore my potential, and I now feel empowered and equipped to handle life’s challenges with greater confidence. Ameenah is an amazing human being. She’s goes out of her way to support you on your healing journey. She’s very patient and genuinely cares for you and relates with you on every level. I always feel so much lighter and more aware about myself after each session with her. We always go way over time but Ameenah never rushes through any session. It’s hard to come across a holistic hypnotherapist who works on body, mind and soul healing and looks at the complete picture and not just fragments. I saw huge improvement in my physical symptoms and found out that my physical symptoms were because of suppressed emotions. It’s so much freeing to know the root cause of my health issues and hypnotherapy helped me discover this. I am so glad to have found Ameenah. I know that hypnotherapy can sound expensive at first but it’s so worth your investment. 🙂

Having done My RTT session with Ameenah was an amazing experience. I had a session done for my insomnia issue and I was a little nervous but Ameenah made me feel so comfortable and her calming voice was so soothing and relaxing. Ameenah was so comforting and professional. Although in hypnosis I was totally aware of the suggestions and yet I was so relaxed. We were able to get into core of how and why I acquired sleep issues in the first place. I was able to realize that how small traumas or probably an event I experienced in my childhood, created a huge impact on my life ever since. She helped me realize that It was just an incident I held onto and made myself have sleepless nights for years. She assured me that I am safe now. I see a noticeable change and am able to have better sleep and wake up rested. Ameenah is amazing and would recommend anyone going through anything to go see her.” R

In 2023-2024 I started feeling anxiety, and other feelings that I have never experienced. I knew something was wrong, and I knew I needed a change. This experience was from workplace stress. It came to the point I had to ask for time off to collect myself. I had a hard time explaining my situation and work-related stress to my family doctor. I felt lost, not being understood, had no support and was completely burnt out. Something in me pointed me to Ameenah once again. Even though I had a hard time explaining to my doctor, but Ameenah understood and knew exactly how to help me and overcome my work-related stress. Ameenah targeted my issues to the core. Even though I had doubts, every time our session ended I felt positive. I didn't except the change that I needed to happen so quickly after our session. I had been applying for jobs months before and I never received a call or acknowledgement. I was constantly over-looked. Ameenah and I had our sessions, I continued the work on myself after our sessions to keep that energy up. Within matter of weeks, I received a call from a prospective job opportunity. This time, I was receiving praise for my experience; this place saw my worth, just like Ameenah saw my worth! There are not enough words to express my gratitude to Ameenah. It is a tough market out there, and if you have work-related stress, and even personal I highly recommend Ameenah. Ameenah has helped me see my light, in all my darkness!! I am in a better place once again thanks to Ameenah! This was my experience from my first visit session with Ameenah in 2021-2022: For the longest time I was seeking something, but I wasn't really sure for what. I found Ameenah and she helped me transform my life in so many ways. She helped me overcome so many battles and now I feel so good and the positive changes in my life. I am able to move passed the past, and heal. She truly has healing energies and is so supportive and so kind. I am forever grateful she came into my life. Thank you Ameenah!!
