The Four Agreements Were Never About Willpower

Hi, it’s Ameenah. I hope you’ve got a quiet minute wherever you’re reading this from. I’ve been wanting to write about this book for a while now, so let’s get into it.

Someone handed me this book so long ago I don’t even remember whose hands they were. Small, thin, that terracotta cover. I read it in an afternoon and thought, well, that’s simple enough. Four agreements. Be impeccable with your word. Don’t take anything personally. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best. I remember actually feeling a little unimpressed. It seemed too easy to be the whole answer to anything.

It took me years of sitting across from people — and a fair amount of failing at my own agreements — to understand that “simple” and “easy” are not the same word at all. These four lines are simple the way breathing is simple. Try doing it on purpose, under pressure, for a full day, and tell me how easy it was.

Where the agreements we’re actually breaking came from

Don Miguel Ruiz calls the process that gets us here domestication. Not a gentle word, and I don’t think he meant it gently. A child comes in wide open, and the people around that child — not out of cruelty, usually, just out of their own conditioning — start handing down rules. Do this, don’t do that, good girl, don’t cry, be quiet now. None of it comes with an explanation the child can evaluate. It just goes in. And somewhere in that process, most of us pick up an entirely different set of agreements than the four Ruiz is describing. Agreements like, my voice causes problems. Or, if someone’s upset, it’s probably my fault. Or, I have to earn rest.

That’s the part I keep coming back to in my own work. Long before anyone can consciously choose to be impeccable with their word, they’ve already made a thousand unconscious agreements about what their word is even worth. You can’t override a program you don’t know is running. So before I talk about the four agreements as a practice, I want to talk about why each one is so much harder than it looks on the page — because there’s actual biology sitting underneath every single one of them.

The word does something to the body, not just the room

Start with the first one. Be impeccable with your word. Most people hear that and think it’s about honesty, about not lying to other people. It’s really about the word you use with yourself, mostly in the privacy of your own head, where nobody’s grading you.

The psychologist Ethan Kross has spent years studying what he calls our inner chatter — the running commentary we narrate our own lives with. And what his research keeps showing is that this isn’t background noise. The words we use on ourselves shape the actual stress response in the body. A harsh inner voice doesn’t just feel bad. It activates something physiological, the same systems that respond to an outside threat, except the threat in this case is coming from inside the house. One of the more useful findings out of that research is how much it helps to create a little distance from that voice — using your own name instead of “I,” the way you’d talk to a friend instead of the way you talk to yourself at two in the morning. It sounds small. It changes the entire relationship between you and the voice.

I think about impeccability with the word less as a moral rule and more as a nervous system practice. Every time you call yourself an idiot under your breath, your body doesn’t know that’s a joke. It responds like you meant it.

Taking it personally was never really a choice to begin with

The second one — don’t take anything personally — is the one that used to frustrate me the most, honestly, because it can sound like it’s asking you to just stop feeling something. It isn’t. What it’s actually pointing at is that almost nothing anyone does to you is really about you. It’s about their own dream, their own domestication, playing out in front of you.

Here’s what I find so validating about the research on this one. The neuroscientist Naomi Eisenberger ran a now well-known study where people were left out of a simple game while their brains were scanned. Being excluded lit up the anterior cingulate cortex — the same region that activates during physical pain. Rejection isn’t a metaphor for pain. To the brain, it partly is pain. So when I tell a client not to take something personally, I’m not asking them to be less sensitive. I’m asking them to understand that their body is going to register a slight the way it registers a burn, whether the reason behind it had anything to do with them or not. The work isn’t pretending it doesn’t hurt. The work is learning to ask, whose story is actually running through me right now.

The brain was never showing you reality. It was showing you its best guess.

Don’t make assumptions might be the most quietly radical of the four, because it’s aimed at something most of us never question — the idea that we’re seeing things as they are.

The neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett has done extensive work showing that the brain doesn’t really perceive the world fresh in each moment. It predicts. It takes everything you’ve already lived through and uses it to guess what’s happening now, then fills in the gaps with that guess before you’re even consciously aware of it. Which means most of what feels like a clear read on someone else — she’s annoyed with me, he doesn’t care, they’re judging me — is really your own history, quietly narrating a scene it hasn’t actually confirmed.

I’ve watched this in session more times than I can count. Someone will describe an entire emotional story about what a partner or a parent was thinking, built on a pause, a tone, a look. And when we slow down enough to ask, did you actually check that, the answer is almost always no. It didn’t need checking. It felt like fact. That’s the assumption talking, dressed up as certainty.

Best was never a fixed number

And then, always do your best — which sounds like the gentlest one and is actually the one people twist into the harshest.

Ruiz is specific about this part, and I don’t think it gets repeated enough. Your best changes. It’s different when you’re sick than when you’re well, different after a bad night’s sleep than after a good one, different in grief than in ease. Kristin Neff’s research on self-compassion backs this up from a completely different angle — she’s found again and again that people who treat themselves with compassion rather than harsh self-criticism don’t become lazy or complacent because of it. If anything, they recover faster from setbacks and stay more motivated over time, because they’re not spending half their energy defending against their own inner judge. Self-criticism doesn’t produce more effort. It mostly just produces more shame, which is a very expensive way to try to motivate a person.

So doing your best on a hard day and doing your best on a good day can look completely different and both still be true.

What happened to you, not what’s wrong with you

I keep the same question underneath almost everything I do in this work, and it belongs here too. Not what’s wrong with you for breaking these agreements constantly. What happened to you, that made honesty feel risky, or rejection feel unbearable, or a pause in someone’s voice feel like proof of something terrible. These four agreements aren’t hard because you’re undisciplined. They’re hard because you’re up against wiring that was laid down long before you had any say in it.

And I’ll add the layer I always end up adding, because I think it belongs in the same room as the rest of this. In over two decades of past life work, I’ve sat with people whose sensitivity to rejection, or whose compulsive people-pleasing with their word, didn’t trace to anything in this childhood at all. Just an old, familiar ache with no scene attached to it in this lifetime. I don’t think every hard agreement needs a past life explanation. Most of what we’re working with really was built right here, in this body, in this family. But some of it is older than that. Some agreements were made before this life even started, and this one just keeps handing us the same lesson in a new shape until we finally look at it directly.

The practice, not the performance

We are not stuck with the agreements we absorbed as children, even the ones that have been running quietly for decades. That pathway was built through repetition, which means it unbuilds the same way. Slowly. Through noticing. Through catching the inner voice mid-sentence and asking if that’s really how you’d talk to someone you loved.

Choice is a superpower here too, and it’s a small one most days. Not becoming impeccable, or unbothered, or assumption-free overnight. Just noticing, once, when the old agreement fires. Hearing the harsh word before it finishes leaving your mouth. Catching yourself mid-assumption and asking if you actually checked. That single moment of noticing is the whole beginning of rewriting an agreement you never remember signing in the first place.

I still catch myself failing all four of these most weeks. I don’t think that ever fully stops. What’s changed is how quickly I notice, and how much less I punish myself for the noticing being late.

This week on Chai With Ameenah, I go into which one of these four has been the hardest for me personally, and the story behind why. If the research is what convinced your mind, come hear the part that convinced the rest of you.

When I first met Ameenah, we connected energetically. I asked questions about hypnotherapy and her responses led me to feel comfortable that she has both the skills and experience to help me work on my healing. I committed to 6 sessions and felt comfortable from the first. Ameenah listened and asked probative questions that allowed us to target the areas most important to me. The changes I've been able to make as a result of our work have been wonderful. Thank you, Meenu!

I think Ameenah is one of the best counselors out there. She cuts through the bullcrap and gives you real life advice. I miss my sessions with her and am thinking of seeing her again because it was very helpful to get the weight lifted off my chest just by talking to her. She also never looked at the clock during my session which I loved.

I had a very similar experience to many of the clients who have previously made their reviews. I had debilitating anxiety ever since I could remember (3-4 years old) which progressed into to multiple involuntary hospitalizations, money spent on psychotherapy where I felt chronically misunderstood and that I felt was formulaic and an overgeneralizing, "outdated" methodology. Years of this made me feel disempowered, and since my symptoms were not improving, I was eventually diagnosed multiple psychiatric disorders. Ultimately, I was met with an array of subsequent treatment regimes via the health care system that never cared to truly appreciate the underlying reasons of the challenges that were symptomatic of a more intrinsic cause. To stress my case, I was experiencing overwhelming anxiety and quasi-delusions that would disrupt the quality of my day-to-day life for years before I started seeing Ameenah. It has been over a month of treatment, and although these symptoms aren't gone entirely and I don't expect them to, I've seen vast improvements to my mental and emotional health, as well as a newfound faith in myself. I speculate this is b/c she actually carefully caters and curates the treatment program, paying attention to the client's actual temperament(s) and characteristics. That alone is what distinguishes her from more traditional forms of therapies. Not only that, but she is a genuine, loving, resourceful and healing person who always takes as much time as you need to talk to you in a way that is productive and conducive to your healing journey. Moreover, she also takes an integrative, holistic approach which incorporates strategies to handle acute stressors, as well long-term strategies that get to the crux of your situation. I highly recommend Ameenah because she gives you the foundations that further encourage independent growth, and what sets her apart is that she also is able to inspire sincere faith in oneself to live a life without limiting and confining beliefs. Update on January 5, 2024: I saw Ameenah two days ago for spiritual and mindset coaching and updated her on my progress on my healing journey. She always answers my questions with earnest humility and sensibility. While it has been months since I have had a hypnotherapy session, all that I have garnered and absorbed from previous sessions have been gestating within my subconscious mind and I have been latently cultivating and priming the lessons I've learned from her without needing to effortfully foster them. Several months ago, it was debilitating for me to merely step outside my house, let alone talk to people while maintaining eye contact and maintain a self-assured posture (for a particular example), now I feel like although not 100% there, I feel much more grounded in my self-frame and feel so much progress towards healing CPTSD and I can let myself love myself by trusting in myself, hence being able to walk outside, have some conversations. If I hadn't consulted Ameenah last summer, I would have surely tried to find services adjacent to her's but would not know where to go for certain. I highly value the time and efforts and work she' done with me, and will be coming back in the future as I feel necessary. Update: September 23, 2024 I stopped seeing Ameenah for her hypnotherapy and spiritual coaching services a while back and resumed every week since late June of this year and I can say that my mind has sincerely acclimated to a different and more constructive and optimistic attitude overall. Before, I was living in a way that was not honouring my authentic self—obstructed by personal obstacles that were prompted by an unhealthy subconscious mind, but after seeing her and identifying the core issues, I recognized what was impeding my self-developmental progress. Finally, I know that there are a ways to go but I am in the midst of reconstructing certain neuropathways with the help of Ameenah to live a life that privileges who I really am at the core and to liberate myself from the reigns of negative thought distortions. :)

Working with Ameenah over the past three months has been amazing! Her insightful knowledge of the brain combined with a spiritual approach to healing has been so helpful for me, and i felt that she really understood me and was able to help me navigate through my hardships. Over the past few months of sessions with her i have noticed a significant positive shift in myself and my life. She is such an amazing and gifted healer, I would highly recommend her to anyone in search of healing💕

Ameenah’s Transformation 90 program has been a game-changer for me, especially in dealing with my anxiety around relationships and showing up authentically. Ameenah is incredibly compassionate and deeply dedicated to her work, creating a safe and supportive space for healing. Through the program, I learned the importance of loving myself first, and I noticed how this self-love naturally improved my relationships. Ameenah’s guidance gave me the tools I needed to explore my potential, and I now feel empowered and equipped to handle life’s challenges with greater confidence. I highly recommend Ameenah’s program to anyone looking to transform their mindset and take control of their life.

Ameenah is an amazing human being. She’s goes out of her way to support you on your healing journey. She’s very patient and genuinely cares for you and relates with you on every level. I always feel so much lighter and more aware about myself after each session with her. We always go way over time but Ameenah never rushes through any session. It’s hard to come across a holistic hypnotherapist who works on body, mind and soul healing and looks at the complete picture and not just fragments. I saw huge improvement in my physical symptoms and found out that my physical symptoms were because of suppressed emotions. It’s so much freeing to know the root cause of my health issues and hypnotherapy helped me discover this. I am so glad to have found Ameenah. I know that hypnotherapy can sound expensive at first but it’s so worth your investment. 🙂

Having done My RTT session with Ameenah was an amazing experience. I had a session done for my insomnia issue and I was a little nervous but Ameenah made me feel so comfortable and her calming voice was so soothing and relaxing. Ameenah was so comforting and professional. Although in hypnosis I was totally aware of the suggestions and yet I was so relaxed. We were able to get into core of how and why I acquired sleep issues in the first place. I was able to realize that how small traumas or probably an event I experienced in my childhood, created a huge impact on my life ever since. She helped me realize that It was just an incident I held onto and made myself have sleepless nights for years. She assured me that I am safe now. I see a noticeable change and am able to have better sleep and wake up rested. Ameenah is amazing and would recommend anyone going through anything to go see her.” R

In 2023-2024 I started feeling anxiety, and other feelings that I have never experienced. I knew something was wrong, and I knew I needed a change. This experience was from workplace stress. It came to the point I had to ask for time off to collect myself. I had a hard time explaining my situation and work-related stress to my family doctor. I felt lost, not being understood, had no support and was completely burnt out. Something in me pointed me to Ameenah once again. Even though I had a hard time explaining to my doctor, but Ameenah understood and knew exactly how to help me and overcome my work-related stress. Ameenah targeted my issues to the core. Even though I had doubts, every time our session ended I felt positive. I didn't except the change that I needed to happen so quickly after our session. I had been applying for jobs months before and I never received a call or acknowledgement. I was constantly over-looked. Ameenah and I had our sessions, I continued the work on myself after our sessions to keep that energy up. Within matter of weeks, I received a call from a prospective job opportunity. This time, I was receiving praise for my experience; this place saw my worth, just like Ameenah saw my worth! There are not enough words to express my gratitude to Ameenah. It is a tough market out there, and if you have work-related stress, and even personal I highly recommend Ameenah. Ameenah has helped me see my light, in all my darkness!! I am in a better place once again thanks to Ameenah! This was my experience from my first visit session with Ameenah in 2021-2022: For the longest time I was seeking something, but I wasn't really sure for what. I found Ameenah and she helped me transform my life in so many ways. She helped me overcome so many battles and now I feel so good and the positive changes in my life. I am able to move passed the past, and heal. She truly has healing energies and is so supportive and so kind. I am forever grateful she came into my life. Thank you Ameenah!!
